Meet my friend, Roger.

Okay, so we aren't technically "friends," but we are facebook friends and that counts for something, right? I hope so. Austin and I are huge fans of Roger Federer. He is the classiest guy in sports. No doubt. While in Chicago at the Nike store, Austin and I bought Roger Federer hats. We love them. Mine is black. Austin's is white. Here's Roger wearing my hat. Well, I guess it's technically his hat.

Roger at this year's Australian Open going on NOW! I hope you are watching.

Spring Weather

We have had some really fantastic weather in Houston lately. It's been sunny with temperatures in the seventies. I will have to look back on this post in May or June when it's 95 degrees with 100% humidity. Here are some views from our balcony yesterday.

Duck Hunting

Over the Christmas holiday, Austin got to spend some time duck hunting, a new favorite hobby.
A big thanks to Andrew for marrying Brittany, whose family lets my family tag along. And a big thanks to Jay for being so generous.

I have the greatest friends anyone could ever ask for. Actually, even if you tried to dream up the greatest friends, they wouldn't be as great as my friends. It started VERY early in my life that God began blessing me with friends. These are my earliest friends and some of the finest people I know. I wanted to post this picture because it sums up my life from about age 4-18. (There was that high school boyfriend that was thrown into the mix...wonder what ever happened to him?). From "goin' rollin'" to "crime chasin,'" we had a ball.
Here's to the CCs!

Busy Season

It has begun folks...the dreaded "busy season." For Austin and all of those who work in accounting, it is a demanding time of year. Last night he got home at 10:15 and seeing as I'm still sitting here alone, I'm guessing it's going to be at least that late. It's very possible there will be lots of blogging going on as I sit at home most nights avoiding the TV.

This is how I picture Austin at work.

So to all the accountants out there....Brittany, Val, Aunt Mary, etc...you are in my thoughts and prayers. Good luck and God speed.

5 days, 3 flights, 3 hotels, and 2 cities

WE ARE HOME!
I could not be more thrilled that at this moment there is not one single travel itinerary email in my inbox!
Last Tuesday was the beginning of a trip that I could have never dreamed would take place. Not because we went to Greece or Italy or some place fabulous like that. But because at the beginning of the optometry school journey, I never dreamed how blessed I would be.
"However, as it is written: No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him."
1 Corinthians 2:9

Our first stop: UMSLCO. That would stand for University of Missouri at St. Louis College of Optometry. My interview there was Wednesday, January 6. I spent the morning going over financial aid information & information about the program. Then had lunch with current students and a tour of the school. Last was the interview, which we were told would be more of "a conversation." And it definitely was. I actually had a great time talking with my two interviewers. It's always fun to explain why I went from college graduation to dental office to Rosati's pizza to Notre Dame to teaching first grade. Wow. That makes my head spin just typing it. We hardly took any pictures while we were in St. Louis. The wind chill was -5 degrees so to be outside was just painful. And to stop and pose for a picture was just out of the question.

Downtown St. Louis during the snow. See the streets?

The most painful picture. The -5 degree wind made it nearly impossible to open your eyes. Not to mention the glare of the sun off of the snow.

The view from our gate at the St. Louis airport. Yes, we took off! And when we landed, it looked exactly the same.

On Thursday we flew to Chicago and barely made it out of St. Louis before flight cancellations began. As soon as we got to Chicago, there is only place to go. Giordano's. Delicious. We even called Pepper from the booth. You don't want to rub it in, but at the same time you feel like he should know you are eating Chicago pizza. That evening, Austin and I are sitting in the hotel room and I begin to have a "I have nothing to wear tomorrow" moment. Even though I had MORE than enough options for the interview, I felt like I was missing "the wow factor." So what does my sweet husband do? He finds the nearest Ann Taylor and we hop in a cab to avoid the slushy streets. Due to the weather, we were the only people in the store and I took full advantage of the employees. I ended up finding this adorable jacket to wear with my black pants. Really, it's adorable. And it was on sale! Thank goodness for Christmas money.
So the next morning, stylin' in my new jacket, it was off to ICO (Illinois College of Optometry). I had a great time at the school. The students were professional and likable. It was just an awesome experience to be there and to have the opportunity to interview there. This process still isn't over for me. Stay tuned to the blog for our decision on where we believe the Lord is leading us to go.

There's that pizza I was telling you about.

Michigan Avenue. Chicago.

Chicago River.

Lake Michigan.

With the interviews behind us, we spent Saturday at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. The highlight of the day was the conversation I had with a beluga whale. I'm not kidding you. He came up out of the water, as if he was standing on his tail and started talking to us!! And what did I do? Started squealing like a school girl. If you are ever in Chicago, take the time to visit the Shedd Aquarium. Your kids will love it!

Christmas 2009

Since Christmas was quite some time ago, I decided I would just post some pictures from some of our Christmas festivities with our families. Hope you enjoy and I hope you had a very Merry Christmas!

Thank you!

Thanks to everyone who has posted comments of support and also called to see how the week is going. Interviews are done! Praise the Lord! Both were great and we are currently FREEZING in Chicago. Back to Houston tomorrow. Lupe Tortilla, I'll see you very soon.

Midwest Interviews

Tomorrow is the beginning of a 5 day journey for Austin and me to the great Midwest. First stop, St. Louis, Missouri for optometry school interview on Wednesday. Next stop, Chicago, Illinois for optometry school interview on Friday. And finally back home Saturday. Please pray for travel safety for us and that everything goes smoothly for me. We are excited about what God is doing in our lives.

"Rejoice in the Lord always, I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus."
Philippians 4:4-7
REJOICE, RELAX, REST (Thanks, Pepper.)

(Back to the blogging world next week! New Year's Eve Party, Christmas, this trip, etc! )

Happy New Year!

We were so happy to be invited to a New Year's Eve party at Club Barnes (aka The Barnes' House). Melissa Barnes is a dear friend of mine from Tech and she grew up here in Houston so when she comes home from Miami to visit, I get to see her, too! But it's not just Melissa that I love. It's everyone in her family that I have met. Sarah, Priscilla, John David, and her lovely parents. We had a blast ringing in the new year with you all!
P.S. John David Barnes (DJ Reverse) was kind enough to set up his lights/lasers/smoke machine in the living room! Dance party!

Priscilla Barnes, Haley Barnes, Melissa Barnes, Sarah Barnes!
(Somedays, I just feel like a Barnes!)

At 1 a.m., I had the honor of helping Mrs. Barnes prepare
breakfast for the whole gang. So much fun!

Me and Melissa.

We're dancing! "You are the best thing....that ever happened to me!"

Me and Priscilla dancing while Austin strategically leans against the door frame...kinda involved, but not totally.

The whole par-tay!

Below are some videos from the party. Sorry for the length, but I just couldn't stop filming!
I don't think these silly things are working. It's late. I will try again tomorrow.
